SCS Charity Show - Leonardslee Gardens, Lower Beeding, West Sussex, - 24th September 2023Leonardslee Gardens Charity Event 2023 - by Tony and Jan Snow Our SCS Charity Event this year was held at Leonardslee Gardens on Sunday 24 September. We arranged with Amber and Katrien from Leonardslee to hold the event on the grass within the grounds; they said that if the ground was too wet the event would have to be held in the car park. The entry fee of £10 per vehicle and all occupants, normally £14.50 per person, included entry to both the event and all Leonardslee's attractions. The weather changed a lot during the previous week and we asked that the decision about where the event would be held was put off for as long as possible. The weather was due to clear Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and Leonardslee agreed to check the ground on Thursday morning. It rained very hard Wednesday night and we were expecting Amber to cancel the event on the grass. However, she rang us early on Thursday and even they were surprised at how firm the ground was. We could go ahead and set up on the grass as arranged - a massive relief as we were ready to email everyone and postpone the event as it was felt that the car park was possibly not a good location for a charity event. Over the weekend we checked the quarter-hourly satellite weather; there was a massive band of rain passing close to the west most of the day on Sunday, but we were very lucky as the rain held off all day. The weather forecast possibly deterred some people that lived to the west from attending, and there were also several other events on the same day that may have reduced numbers. As arranged, committee members and helpers arrived early before the event started to set up all the signs, gazebos and other equipment. The autojumblers arrived to set up, and Leonardslee had already set up their Airstream wagon for refreshments. Leonardslee also kindly put out several tables and benches on the grass for us to use -we could then watch the wallabies while having a coffee. We collected Leonardslee maps from reception and gave them out as event visitors arrived - many people did not realise we were already inside the grounds of Leonardslee and could enjoy all the facilities with their entry fee. In total, 92 vehicles took part in the event. There was a varied selection of cars, trucks, and military vehicles, British, American and European, vintage, classic and other interesting vehicles. The day was very successful, everyone was respectful of the grass, and Leonardslee staff and volunteers were very helpful, friendly and accommodating. In addition to the much reduced admission, Leonardslee Gardens also donated a family day ticket for two adults and three children, and a bottle of their best wine from their sister vineyard for our charity raffle. These two prizes were raffled separately and helped to boost the charity coffers. Katrien from Leonardslee came to see the cars with her son and was pleased with our layout and the number of vehicles at the event. She said that Leonardslee would welcome us back again. This is something that we are already arranging for 2024, earlier in the year to hopefully get better weather. Leonardslee usually have buggies to transport visitors around the gardens. Unfortunately, on the day there were problems with the buggies and they were unavailable. At the end of the day, we had the normal trophy presentations, judged by committee members. Again this year we had the 'Vehicle that made me smile' award. All trophies were appreciated by the winners. Many people said how much they enjoyed the event and location. Those who had not visited before were surprised how many attractions Leonardslee had to offer. In addition to over 240 acres of gardens and woodlands, there are lakes, many large and specimen trees, the deer park, wallabies, cafes, a sculpture trail, vineyard and wine tasting - and the famous Leonardslee dolls house museum. We would like to thank everyone who brought their lovely vehicles; there was something for everyone. Thank you to all the helpers, volunteers and organisers. Thank you to Leonardslee for allowing us to hold our charity event in such a beautiful setting. SCS August Show - Worthing Rugby Club, Angmering, West Sussex, - 20th August 2023Worthing Rugby Club Classic Car Show Report One of our favourite Classic Car Shows is at Worthing Rugby Club, Angmering and this year it certainly did not disappoint. It was a beautiful August day and good to see people enjoying themselves looking at the cars and visiting the stalls. There were over 200 cars on display and the judges have a very difficult job in deciding the winners. It's good to have them in decade order, starting from pre--war to modern class. The winners and runners up were:

SCS May Show - The Lavender Line, Isfield, - 21st May 2023Lavender Line Classic Car Show by Barbara Albon Newsletter Editor This show was very special for me as my cousins Gilly and Graham were visiting from California and as they are members of Southern Classics they timed their visit to coincide with a show. I hadn't seen them, due to COVID, for over 3 years. Lavender Line is always a popular venue due to there being plenty to do and see. It was good to see the trains running again this year, as last year Lavender Line struggled to get volunteers to drive the trains and maintain the station, as indeed did so many other organisations, including ourselves! There is something nostalgic about old trains, railway stations and goods yards, very fitting with all the classic cars. The show had all the usual attractions, there were over 150 vehicles displayed, all dearly loved by their owners. Member Roy de Boise made a video of the show and you can view that along with others on the website www.southernclassics.org.uk My cousin Graham, a self confessed petrol head & owner of a few British Classics himself, was delighted to be asked by Phil Webb, our Events co-ordinator, to be one of the judges. The winners were: 1st 1973 Simca Matra Bagherra 2nd 1959 Chevrolet Corvette 3rd 1939 Jaguar SS 1.5 litre There were a good many auto-jumblers in attendance and our members were out looking for bargains and that car part that they just can't do without!
